If you follow the big curve of the road, you’ll come across a little back street that runs parallel to the main street. The area of land between the main street and the back street is where the oshi homes were.
Oshi homes had tatsumichi paths to their entrances, rivers nearby, and, of course, the buildings themselves, but there was so much more that distinguished them.
There were also gardens behind the homes, and at the back of the grounds, they often kept family graves or small shrines, where ancestors and deities could be honored. If you walk along the backstreet, you might be able to see the graves, or the backs of the shrines. If you spot them, you’re essentially seeing the backside of the oshi homes.
