On the left side of the backstreet is a small river. It’s currently covered up, but if you listen closely, you might be able to hear it.
There are many natural springs around Mt. Fuji, but surprisingly, there are not many in Kamiyoshida. The land here is covered in hardened lava and fallen rocks, so if there is any springwater, it gets absorbed deep underground.
As a result, the people living here had a hard time maintaining a steady water supply, so they decided to create rivers to draw water directly from Yamanaka Lake. In essence, this river is man-made.
