This guidepost is said to have been created in 1740. Carved into the sign is, “To the right is for Edo, To the left is for Kōshū”. The right takes you north, through the city of Ōtsuki to Edo (now Tokyo). Go left, and you’ll travel west, through the Misakatō Pass to Kōfu City.
These directions haven’t changed much, even to this day.
