Why was the land allotted for oshi homes in Shimojuku more narrow? In 1606, the Warring States Period ended, and the Edo Period began.

In other words, towns that had originally been built like Kyoto were now being modified to fit the Edo style. The change in the dynasty caused a change in how the land was divided.

In this plot, along the main street, is a shop called “Yamaguchi Somemonoten”. Here, they have preserved the tools and materials used to dye cloth with indigo during the Edo period. There is even a shrine in the factory where you can pray to the god of indigo dyeing, Aizenmyō.
