A spinning design of red, blue, and white.
Try walking in the middle of a rotating space and you will find that you will almost drown in the turning, and may even lose your sense of balance.
Some people may recall the red and white sign you can see at a barber shop. Do you know of the sign’s origins? During the Middle Ages of Europe, hairdressers were also surgeons. For that reason, it is said that the red represented arteries, blue for veins, and white for the color of bandages.
With this knowledge, try walking through again. You would probably feel as if you are lost in the human body and swimming in blood.
And here, the art poses a question to you.
Echigo-Tsumari has close to over 200 artworks, and each piece of art delivers a different message. Going forward, you may feel as though you are being swallowed in a vortex of information and lose your sense of equilibrium. However, you do not have to take in every piece of information; remembering even just one artwork is enough.
Furthermore, as you travel the between mountain foothills and farmland land you will find that whenever you make purchases, including food and lodging, and extend greetings to the people in the villages, the place is quite animated. It is as if you have become the blood that stimulates the circulatory system in the aging town of Echigo-Tsumari.
Let these little interactions and your role in the town’s unique ecosystem, bring even more meaning to the time you spend here.
