The second floor contains Japanese- and Western-style rooms. The floor of the Western-style room was crafted in Hakone, but one can sense the fusion of the Japanese and Western design of the era in the warped ceiling and other areas. The bespoke glass and curtains convey vestiges of olden styles to the modern age. From the transoms to the walls, to the ceilings, hallways and window banisters, the difference between the Japanese and Western styles is clearly communicated in the meticulous layout and design of these rooms.
For generations the Ishida family has distinguished itself, commanding the attention of even the town heads, first as sake brewers and then through the opening of a medical clinic. They mingled with many cultured people, including the famous painter Ritsuzan Tateoka. One of his paintings actually remains in the house. Their influence extended to the financial world as well, collecting many works from Eiichi Shibusawa, the “father of Japanese capitalism, whose face will adorn the 10,000 yen bill starting in 2024.
