Here we have a unique and unusual experience for you to try.
We’ll show you how to practice Zen by sucking on a piece of candy.
In Zen Buddhism, there is a practice called “Gyojuzaga.” By actively focusing on one thing at a time, whether it be eating, walking, or wringing out a wet rag, you can practice Zen. It can be anything, as long as you fully immerse yourself in the action and block out all other thoughts.
For example, when you’re cleaning your house, just focus on the act of cleaning. In that same way, we want you to try sucking on a piece of candy and directing your focus to that one act, that one point of concentration. It’s there where the path to Zen will reveal itself to you.
First, splash your feet with hot water. Once your feet have warmed up, take the piece of candy you received at the entrance and place it in your mouth. Suck on this piece of candy and focus solely on that action. The water that runs beneath Shinsho-ji is the same water used to make your piece of candy.
When you are ready, take 7 minutes to turn your focus onto the piece of candy and immerse yourself in the “drop of zen” experience.
