If you were able to fall asleep with the curtains open, the bright sunlight coming through the window might have been what woke you. Some days, you might wake to gentle sunlight leaking out from behind the clouds or the orchestral sounds of rain. As you awaken into this new day, what kind of energy do you feel from the nature around you?
What does the scenery outside of your room look like? What differences do you see in the sea today compared to yesterday?
On a calm day, the sea of Japan is so calm that it reflects the sky like a mirror. On a rough day, the waves are so strong that boats are unable to leave port. The state of the water changes from hour to hour. Even the smallest ship passing in the distance will send ripples across the surface. Let's imagine the surface of the water as our hearts. The reason why the smallest occurrence can send ripples across our hearts is that it’s connected with so many other aspects of our lives. The scenery and landscapes around us could also influence us in the same way.
How do we come across these different discoveries that lie waiting in the land?
There are many things we subconsciously miss on a day-to-day basis. For example, are you aware of your breathing right now? Let’s take a second to lie down and close our eyes. Let’s synchronize our breathing to the music that follows.
How was that? Were you able to turn your focus to your breathing? This process may be similar to meditation, but unlike Zen, it doesn’t require you to clear your mind. To think of nothing, you need to let everything flow through your mind and come face to face with yourself. As if you are standing in a crowd of people and suddenly realize you are just one of the many people passing you by.
When you’re inside, you are cut off from the outside world. But just by opening the door, you open yourself up to a world of information. Once you are outside, we want you to remember what you noticed while inside. Breathing in itself is absorbing what is outside of you. Just taking one breath on its own won’t be enough. You also exist in a state that is constantly influenced by what surrounds you. That is the connection we want you to focus on.
Now, for the last minute, as you continue to breathe, we want you to let your thoughts come and go, let them flow through you. By realizing what is outside of you, you realize what is inside. We want you to focus on cultivating this feeling.
