There is a certain brewery that you can’t overlook when talking about American craft beer. Critics praise their product as "One of the best beers in the world."
The brewery we’re talking about was founded by Ken Grossman in 1980 and opened with their signature Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. The intense aromas of pine and citrus attracted customers and sparked the American craft beer revolution.
Scott Brimmer, the founder of Brimmer Brewing, was amongst those impressed and inspired by the legend of Sierra Nevada. Before coming to Japan, he worked at Sierra Nevada while he was a student, eventually running the brewing there as well.
Scott’s interest and passion for brewing grew, and finally, he launched his own brewery in 2011 in Japan with his first beer, “Pale Ale,” a beer loyal to its name.
Brimmer Brewing's Pale Ale is a staple to the craft beer world, with its citrus aroma and caramel-like sweetness. Mr. Brimmer's wife, a representative of Brimmer Brewing, had this to say about their Pale Ale-- "It wasn’t easy at first-- there was a lot of trial and error, and a lot of failures. We’ve now come up with a great product, but we want to make it the best. We’re nearly there, I think.”
The small family-owned brewery runs in a quiet residential area. But you can also get a glass of Brimmer’s beer across the street from the JR Kuji Station. Once you exit the gate, look at the building in front of you and you’ll see the store sign for “Brimmer Beer Station Kuji” on the second floor.
When you enter the shop, you immediately hear the buzz of customers chatting, mixed with the sound of trains and railroad crossings. The owner said that “This shop has gradually become an integral part of the city of Kawasaki.”
In addition to pale ale, they also offer a light-bodied golden ale and a darker porter with a hint of chocolate-like aroma. According to the owner, "The taste is consistent and delicious" and is loved by the local people.
"Brimmer Brewing is a talented brewer who has won multiple International Beer Cup awards and I want more people to know what great things we’re up to in Kawasaki."
