If you love natural history museums, this is the place for you. As its name suggests, the Darwin Room is devoted to natural sciences, taxidermy, and entomology. Like many of the businesses in Shimokita, the Darwin Room does not brand itself strictly but instead showcases a niche interest in an approachable, intimate way; in this case, they call themselves a “liberal arts lab.”
Indeed, with all its greenery and wildlife collections, beautifully illustrated books, spyglasses, and notebooks, the Darwin Room feels less like a shop and more like someone’s study. The staff here can both make good coffee and talk about the origin of various insects.
They only have a handful of seats along the ivy-framed windows, reserved for café patrons, but anyone is free to browse their shop or admire their collection, which includes butterflies, birds, and a full-sized zebra.
