A lively izakaya with a traditional feel but modern Japanese fusion dishes, great for crowds.

Tucked on a back street just around the corner from Mister Donut, you’ll find Shirube, one of Shimokita’s biggest and most popular restaurants. With the ambiance of a traditional izakaya but a menu of Asian fusion, Shirube is always crowded with people – both Japanese and foreign, and is great for groups.

We tried interviewing the staff, and they were polite but tight-lipped shrugging off any questions regarding their opinions on the local culture or construction.

Once your shoes are in their cubby, you can settle comfortably into the horigotatsu-style table. Try to get a seat around the central kitchen to watch the chefs at work! Enjoy the flaming mackerel, negitoro avocado dip with toasted bread, deep fried prawns with spicy mayo, or a warming bowl of oden soup complete with a tower of soy sauce-cooked daikon.
