Portrait of a Princess Wearing Armor

Nobuyuki Sanada was the first feudal lord of the Matsushiro Clan and Daiei-ji enshrines his wife, Komatsuhime. The portrait of her looks peculiar. She wears the armor of six sen coins and, for some reason, wears a Jinbaori jacket with a Tokugawa Family crest on it. Why is she portrayed as a female warrior?

This is connected to her familial background; to her older brother taking charge of the Eastern Army and her younger brother Yukimura and her father taking charge of the Western Army. After the separation, her father stopped by Nobuyuki's castle to see his grandson and say farewell. However, Komatsuhime, who was guarding the castle, blocked him, saying, "Now that you’re an enemy, I won’t let you in no matter who you may be." She is said to have stood up with a naginata blade.

"This is how a samurai’s wife should be. Now, my heart is at rest," her father replied and pulled the soldiers back. In exchange for not entering the castle, he asks for permission to stay in the castle town overnight. Komatsuhime, who granted his wish, appeared in the castle town with her child that night. She fulfilled his hope of seeing the grandson.

Brave and kind Komatsuhime. When you look at the portrait of her, imagine what kind of person she was.
