The characters in this calligraphy spell a long phrase that appears in a Rakugo comedy play called “Sarugoke.” In the play, the word “Saru,” or “monkey” is taboo, but that doesn’t stop a loquacious character from spouting it off in between naming different Nara landmarks. But that is neither here nor there– for now, let’s open the window. From here, you can see some locations that appear in the play: Sanjo-Dori, Nan’en-do, Uneme Shrine, and yes, “Sarusawa” Pond.
