Although this hotel is located in Naramachi, few people know that Naramachi was originally part of the Gango-Ji Temple grounds. Gango-Ji was at the peak of prosperity during the Nara Period. However, its decline started along with the move of Japan’s capital to Kyoto, and a fire during the Muromachi Period dealt the final blow, leaving it in ruins with no hope of rebuilding. People built homes there afterward, and that is how modern-day Naramachi was born. You can still find pieces of the old Gango-Ji Temple here and there. They say the old Temple was the birthplace of a demon. He’s not a murderous monster, but rather Gagoze, an ogre who hunts bad ogres.
