MRS. HAGIWARA KANNA(MRS. CHHEANG SENG TEAKKHENA)
BORN IN 1970 IN PHNOM PENH, LIVES IN KANAGAWA

In 1980, there were 15 Cambodian refugees travelling together to Japan. Six of them were Kanna’s family members.

This photo was taken 40 years after they stepped foot on Japanese soil during production of Alive – Chapter IV in early 2020.

At the time, Kanna’s grandma (A Ma) was living in a retirement centre. We were granted permission from the centre, where this photo was taken. I saw their photo taken at Narita Airport 40 years prior. They looked very happy then. While photographing them, I asked: “How do you feel?” They smiled at me naturally. Later on, there was news that a staff member working at one of the retirement centres contracted COVID-19. Therefore, all retirement centres are barred from family visits.

It is a good opportunity to document their photo here.
