MR. CHAKARA LIM
BORN IN 1972 IN PHNOM PENH,LIVES IN SOUTH AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND.

In 1984, Chakara Lim escaped to Khao I Dang camp with his sister Chanmony. They stayed in the camp for about four years before being accepted for resettlement in New Zealand.

When leaving the camps, people tried to find ways in which they could carry their small possessions to new lands. One way was to buy ready-made boxes on which they could put their names of one family member and their destination. Chakara bought this box in order to carry his study books to New Zealand. He first arrived at the Māngere Refugee Resettlement Centre in Auckland and spent a few hours there before heading to Christchurch. There he shared a small home with four other people. This refugee box was stored in his garage continuously from 1987 until the day this photograph was taken in 2018.
In 1996, he moved to Auckland.
