Kumagawa-juku is the Mackerel Road’s post station town. Obama fishermen catch mackerel early in the morning, and their wives carry it to Kumagawa-juku. They set off from Obama while it’s still dark, bearing heavy loads on their backs. They run into regulars in the towns along the way, until they arrive at Kumagawa at around noon. Then they are passed to the proud “kaido-kasegi”, men who will take an entire 24 hours to transport the mackerel to Kyoto.
