Keep heading north and close to Shinjuku Gyoen you will find All Seasons Coffee. With more places to sit and a large communal table, it is a place for both conversation and productivity. Started by another former Paul Bassett bean roaster, the store set up shop in 2015.
“When I decided to open a store, I tried finding a good location but many good properties get snatched up quickly. I got lucky when finding this place, a spot near the park with a lot of business foot traffic,” said the owner as he poured coffee beans into the roaster. “Our business actually changes by the season as many Tokyoites and travelers alike come to gape at the cherry blossoms and fall leaves of Shinjuku Gyoen,” he added.
At sundown, after the store closes, the area is home to many inebriated guests. Known as “Nichome”, there are many bars and clubs nearby. Originally host to many gay patrons, the area has now developed for better or worse into a more mainstream choice for Tokyo revelers.
Recently beginning to roast their own beans, until now the store has featured Saitama’s famous Hoshikawa Cafe coffee along with roasters from Kumamoto in southern Japan. Whether they are using their own beans or featuring guest beans, having drip coffee here will no doubt be delicious.
The many office workers that pass through often provide good tips on the best local shops. These tips are often valuable to provide the more transient guests with good recommendations for the area. According to the staff there are two notable restaurants you should stop by. Around a one minute walk away is the Hiroshima style restaurant named Aki. Walking out of All Seasons go straight and the store will be on your right side. There is no English written outside the store, just the symbols of the store name, “安芸”, written on the wall. With Japanese tatami seating and separate bar, you can get a taste of traditional Japanese flavors.
If you are looking for more Western style eats, the baristas had nothing but good things to say about the restaurant Burger Kitchen Chatty Chatty. They serve mouth watering burger creations such as Blue Cheese Burger, Teriyaki Burger, and the often sought after monthly burger that as the name suggests changes regularly. For Chatty Chatty the popularity has grown to the point where you may have to wait in line like a true Tokyoite.
At All Seasons Coffee, the warmth between the guests and staff is apparent.“When customers pick up or return their cup it is always a chance to connect on a human level,” said the owner. Forming these connections has helped the store grow rapidly to become one of the best cups of coffee near Shinjuku station.
