Once upon a time, the center of Wakasa province was an area between Kumagawa and Obama called “Onyū.” It was known as the province that supplied food for the emperor, so there was much traffic to Kyoto. In exchange for salt and fish from Kumagawa, they brought back the culture and customs of Kyoto. This led to the founding of several temples, including Jingūji Temple and some that are national treasures. Jingūji Temple is the site of the O-Mizu Okuri festival, which has connections to Todai-ji Temple in Kyoto.
