Standing in the Footsteps of History Kumano Kodo Walking Path

Magose-toge Pass spans from the town of Kihoku to the city of Owase. Considering the kanji characters, which mean “horse” and “cross,” many people often ask whether horses crossed these mountains. However, the origin of the name of this pass is “ the crossing between two mountains.”

Magose-toge Pass Route is famous for its elaborate and expansive cobblestone.

While most other cobblestone routes are constructed with steps, this one, though also paved in cobblestone, is smooth like a gentle slope, without steps. This route is the most beautiful cobblestone route among the Kumano Kodo Iseji paths.

While most other mountain paths are constructed with steps, this one has none and is rather a long, smooth, and winding path that slowly continues over the mountain. The Iseji path is probably one of the most beautiful cobblestone routes in Japan.

If you take a little detour, you can stand atop Mt. Tengurasan, Mt. Binshiyama, or Zo-no-Se and enjoy the view of Owase City. There is more to this pass than just the cobblestone paths – the views are spectacular as well!
