Japan has a knack for “likening” things to other things. A stone may represent a waterfall; sand may express a river. If we run with this aesthetic comparison, the absence of objects may represent “emptiness,” whereas their presence may express “reality.”

Perhaps that is why Japan became so prone to personifying things, hearing voices in plants, animals, and even inanimate objects.

Listen to our audio guide and join the master gardener on your stroll through the Kyū Shiba Rikyū Garden, where every object has a voice – tune your senses, and listen to their stories.

Listen carefully and you’ll be able to hear them clear as day

※Please be careful of fences, uneven flooring, and sudden steps and flooring.
