Introduction

Treasure Hunt of
Nara-machi’s Secrets

If you walk around Nara-machi, a district of Nara, you might think that it’s such a nice little old town. However, if you just wander around, you are bound to miss some things.

For example, you might miss the statues of Jizo on a boat located under Sarusawa Pond. Why are they on a boat? Why are there even Jizo statues? As you learn more about the hidden stories behind the town of Nara, the more you are able to see. You might get that “Aha!” moment. Those little discoveries are treasures to travelers. Things that the residents of Nara don’t even know, things you didn’t even realize were there. We will lead you on a treasure hunt.

In order to do this, we were shown around the town by Yoshiko Tomomatsu-san, who we believe to be the best guide in Nara. It was a wonderful spending time with her as she shared to us the secrets of Nara-machi.

And now, we would like to share them with you on your travels.
