When Obama Castle was built in the Edo Period and Obama Nishi-Gumi was established as a castle town, Obama prospered as a center of the port. Obama was home to Kitamae-bune companies and fish caught by Nishizu fishermen were sold at Obama market. They called the road to Kyoto Saba Kaido, after their mackerel specialty.

As you walk around the town with the Obama Nishi-Gumi guide, you start from the beginning of Saba Kaido and get a complete picture of the area, from Obama to Nishizu to Wakasa.
