What’s that sound in the background?
That’s the sound of a pottery wheel turning.
At this workshop, you can make pottery using an electric potter’s wheel or paint on an unglazed piece of pottery.
The history of pottery is over 20,000 years old. The current style of firing at high temperatures is said to have been introduced from Korea and China during the Asuka Period.
Pottery flourished during the Momoyama Period and mass production began throughout the Edo Period. Shizuoka is the birthplace of a number of pottery techniques such as Shizuhata-yaki and Shitoro-yaki.
At this workshop you can often hear people say, “I wonder what I’m going to make today.” In the world of pottery, there’s no blueprint to follow or definition of what’s right or wrong. The clay, which changes its shape at will, is infinitely free.
Shaping the clay on the wheel is only the beginning; the real story starts once you take it home.
We hope you can experience the joy that follows creating unique pieces of art with your own hands.
