Finally, we arrived at the center of Yakuoin, the Great Main Hall, the spiritual heart of Mount Takao.

This temple was founded by the monk Gyoki during the Nara Period and is dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha who is believed to heal illnesses and disasters. The temple later became a significant site for Shugendo, particularly after the enshrining of Izuna Daigongen, the guardian deity of the mountain.

Goma ascetic practices take place several times a day here. Goma is a fire-based prayer ritual that symbolizes the wisdom of Buddha.

It’s believed to burn away earthly desires and deliver wishes to the deity. As you observe, you might hear the drums, sutras being chanted, and the sound of conch shells resonating throughout the area.

In front of the main hall, you’ll find a rope connecting to the Gohonzon. Please take the rope in your hands and pray quietly. You may sense a connection to the Gohonzon, as if it reaches out to you in return.
