In summing up this building architecturally, the phrase “generous” or “open” is often used. To understand what we mean you have to see the building for yourself.
From the outside, at first glance it appears to be traditional Japanese design, but if you look closely you cannot see the heavy tile and thin roof style of Japanese houses. Instead, here houses a more modern feel while black pebbles and bamboo are traditional materials, As you pass under the overhanging roof, you can once again see they are utilized in a modern way.
As you proceed inside the building you will overlook a large garden. Architecture plays a part in making you feel as if you are transported outside of Tokyo. The top of the ceiling seems to connect to the landscape of the garden, bridging the distance between you and the nature. With each changing season nature is seamlessly integrated with the building. Perhaps the “open or generous” description of this place is spot on, as the architecture, scenery of the garden, and time spent here are all worked into the concept of the building.
