Have you never had this compulsive need to eat liver? No? Maybe it’s a Japanese thing…
Nowadays, you can’t even eat raw liver anymore. At first, they only regulated beef liver, but after 2015 you couldn’t even eat Pork Liver! Even still, I hear people talking about how it’s impossible to forget that flavor. Sometimes I even dream that I’m eating Liver Sashimi…
Of course, they don’t serve raw liver, but there is a shop that reminds me of the old days. That shop is called “Liver Land.” The sign looks like it was written by a child right? But it works. This is the last paradise. That’s right. The name is supposed to be a play on “Neverland.”
When you go here, the first thing you have to try is the Grilled White Liver Teppanyaki (420 Yen). The white liver, which they cook on a teppan-yaki grill, is served on a piping hot iron plate. It falls apart in your mouth, melting together with the umami flavor of soy sauce and butter . It goes great with alcohol. If you want a more simple Japanese flavor, I recommend you go with the Grilled White Liver and Salted Leek dish (420 Yen).
Another popular dish is the Fried Liver Cutlet Kushi Skewers (1 stick 180 Yen.) White liver is made from chicken, but the fried cutlets are made usings pork liver. With a crispy exterior and juicy meat inside, the pork oozes juice as you bite into it. It’s irresistibly good! The daily menu is also definitely worth checking out. For example, there’s the Assortment of 3 Pork “Sashimi” (620 Yen) dish, which includes heart, tongue, and skirt steak cooked at very low temperatures.
Hoppy is the best choice to drink with Liver. Have you ever tried Hoppy? It tastes like beer, but by itself, it only has a mere 0.8% of alcohol content. Most of the time you drink it with Shochu. This shop also serves “Triple Chilled Hoppy.” First you pour freezing cold Shochu into a glass which has been frozen as well. Follow that up with chilled Hoppy mixed in to the customer’s liking, and there you have it! Even if the ice melts, the flavor itself doesn’t get diluted, so you can really enjoy the flavor of the hoppy itself.
This last paradise feels like a second home! Thanks to its warm, at home atmosphere, there are a lot of women who come here by themselves, too. It’s also a great place to come drink with friends. When the shop employees hear you say “Kanpai,” or “Cheers!” they respond by saying “Otsukaresama desu!” or “thank you for your hard work!” Hearing that, you feel like you can get the energy to go to work the next day.
