Well, we have arrived at this unusual “line” in the road, but what’s unusual is actually the present-day road. This line shows the former Suzaku Avenue.

Suzaku Avenue is the name given to the main street of old capital cities such as Heijō-kyō and Heian-kyō. This Suzaku Avenue is the main street that runs through the center of Dazaifu, and is 36 meters wide and 1.5 kilometers long. The street branches off like a grid, with inns and other various buildings alongside it. Michizane’s residence at Enoki Shrine is called Minami-kan (South Hall), and is located at one end of Suzaku Avenue. If you go straight down the road to the other end, where will you arrive?
