A hole between the sea and the mountains opens up to the largest cavern in the Oga Peninsula. It was carved by the ocean waves, and in ancient times, was a perilous obstacle to travelers along the shoreline road. To reduce the risk, they devised an idea to place hooks along the cave walls. Allegedly, this is the origin of the name “Kankane” - “kagi” meaning “hook”, “kake” meaning “to hang”. “Kagikake” then morphed into “Kankane”. Entering the cave is dangerous due to falling rocks, so mind your head and keep out.
