Created in 2007, Monocle has quickly become the lifestyle guide for the Millennial Generation. You will also notice that minimalist design is a key feature of both the magazine and inside the store. Stepping into Monocle you will notice the sharp contrast to the mass consumer shopping pattern found in the surrounding Shibuya area.
Publishing 10 magazines a year, in addition to city guides, the company is trying to be more than just any cliche lifestyle guide, it also tries to espouse an international perspective and remain current.
The head office is in London, but the company has bureaus across the world in New York, Toronto, Hong Kong, Singapore, and of course Tokyo. The company doesn’t hide its affection for Japan as the London headquarters is named the “midori house”, meaning green house in Japanese.
Every year the Monocle publishes a list of the “most livable cities” and in 2017 Tokyo ranked on the top of the list for the third time. Once you start to live in Tokyo, it’s easy to forget the strengths of the city, but Monocle does a great job of highlighting the sides of the city you begin to take for granted when you live here for a number of years.
