The restaurant “Sankiro” was founded at the end of the Meiji era by a woman with a good eye for business.

At the time, Moji Port boasted the largest population in Kitakyushu, even larger than the capital, Kokura. With hoards of people coming and going, this place was the perfect location for this woman to demonstrate her talents.

She started by building a three-story wooden traditional Japanese restaurant.
This restaurant, Sankiro, perfectly represented the essence of “Mojiko Retro” and attracted all sorts of visitors from actors, poets, and even men who called themselves pirates. It’s still a widely popular restaurant to this day.
