Just from looking at the facade, you can see that Mother Bar has worn its creativity on its sleeve, standing out from most buildings in the world, let alone Shimokita. A psychedelic patchwork of warped wood, concrete, and colorful glass and tile mosaics, this bar and restaurant feels like a treehouse dreamed up by Antoni Gaudí.
Come in for 300-yen drinks at happy hour and chat with the friendly staff while the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan play =-- on vinyl in the background.
Besides a range of imported beers, the house specialty is a cinnamon-spiced, sweet tequila-like spirit called Mori, which has a secret recipe and is stored in a skull-shaped bottle at the bar. They recommend it on the rocks, paired with their amazing nachos. (It can be hard to find genuinely good Mexican food in Japan, but Mother Bar’s nachos are my favorite in Tokyo!)
Their international menu offerings also include Vietnamese spring rolls, chorizo and beans, pad thai, spaghetti with an avocado cream sauce, and tasty vegetarian options. Over the years, I’ve tried a bit of everything and have never been disappointed.
With such a bold aesthetic and diverse cuisine, it seems that Mother Bar never aimed to “fit in” - an independent spirit that we’re sure will keep it charging into the future.
