The Shimonoseki Nabecho Post Office was built at the end of the 19th century, making it the oldest existing post office in Japan. Both tourists and locals come to visit the renovated Western-style building, drawn there by an aura of history and nostalgia. This popularity has also led couples who have emotional ties to Shimonoseki for one reason or another to choose the courtyard here to host their wedding ceremonies. The exact date the post office was built remains unknown, but that doesn’t change how important it is to the city as a piece of history and culture.
This area is home to a few other culturally significant buildings like the former Akita Shokai and the former Shimonoseki Consulate. Another example of “retro,” which is a bit different from “Mojiko Retro.”
