There was a time when Yahata was the talk of the Japanese steel industry, so naturally, they also had a blast furnace. A blast furnace is used to melt iron and extract iron ore.
You can make iron by applying hot air to steamed coal, which is also called “coke.” The job of a furnace worker is grueling, hot, and very dangerous, but when you look at their faces you can sense how seriously they take their work.
During my break, I encourage myself with the same thoughts every day. With this job, I can feed my family well. With this job, I can enjoy my days off with a nice drink.
“Okay, let’s get to it.”
And my shift starts again…
Even though the blast furnace is no longer used, it still stands tall as a part of Yahata history. I can imagine the proud workers of that time and how they explained the importance of the furnace to the city and their own lives.
