This was the home to Kenjiro Matsumoto, a businessman who made a fortune in the coal mining industry during the Meiji era. The building was designed by the architect Tatsuno Kingo, the same man who designed Tokyo Station and the Bank of Japan Head Office. He used Art Nouveau to design the main building of the residence in a Western-style. The other buildings have been designated as cultural properties. This beautiful building, which has been used for events and weddings, is a must-see when you visit Tobata.
