The charm of Moji Port is not limited to the Mojiko Retro District. If you go a little further from the station, you’ll find the shopping district “Sakaemachi Gintengai” which has been there since the Showa era. During Japan’s period of economic growth, these shops were welcoming customers all day and all night. They didn’t even need to use lanterns during evening festivals because the shop lights were always lit and the district was constantly shining.
Eventually, Japan’s economic boom came to a halt and the bustling Sakaemachi shopping district grew quiet as well. Those who remember the glorious era of wealth and prosperity think back on it with pride, and their descendants are working hard to keep the district alive.
Sakaemachi Gintengai-- A traditional downtown area that’s different from “Mojiko Retro.”
Even though the times may change, the inviting smiles of the shopkeepers at the Sakaemachi shopping district will always remain.
