This Yōkai is one type of monster cat. It changed from a cat into a Yōkai as it grew old, and its tail split in two. Since its tail is split, it is called the Nekomata, or Mythical Two-tailed Monster cat.
Cats and foxes are prone to becoming Yōkai.
There are some monster cats which would disguise themselves as women and work in the red light district. Some disguise themselves with a handkerchief and dance, and others deceive humans and devour them. There are also stories of cats who lost their owners to marital strife and became monsters in order to enact their revenge on those who did them wrong. Cats have always been so close to us since long ago, and maybe that is why they are so prone to becoming Yōkai.
