The Mackerel Road begins in the port of Obama, along which the women of Obama would carry their freshly caught fish to the town of Kumagawa. Then, the men of Kumagawa would continue this journey up and over the mountains into Kyoto. But why is it that the people of Kyoto sought out the fish of Obama? This goes back to the Edo period, when the prosperity of the fishing industry and cargo ships was at its height. Let’s use this as a theme as we travel around the city and try to find our own answers.
